Iron Viking Society

In the year 2002, of September, a man by the name of Master Michael Ronald Ramirez, protege to the great GM Ben Lema of the famed Lightning Scientific Arnis Intl., founded the Iron Viking Society. Its main goal is to preserve the ideals, philosophy, and the legacy left by the late Grand Master Benjamin Luna Lema. The birth of its name was realized when Master Ronald Ramirez read a certain article in a magazine that depicts the many characteristics of these men who are considered masters of the sea, who have quite, remarkably, resembles the Filipino warrior spirit and Traditional Lightning Arnis itself. The Vikings, although mostly sea-farering warrior raiders, lived their lives as farmers, merchants 0r craftsmen, like the Filipino's of old. Their famous raids and battles reached from Scandinavia up to Denmark. Their main offensive weapons were the spear, sword and battle-axe. According to the historians, "swords were very costly to make, and a sign of high status. The blades were usually double edged and up to 90 cm, or a little over, in length, but early single edged sabres are also known. They were also given names, such as Leg-Biter and Gold Hilt. They use their swords to hew down the enemy or split them in two. Unlike the spanish fencers, who prefer cutesy poo stabs, the vikings, since they were built for strength, prefer to hack an opponent." We, the many men and women who are members of this society, follow the same spirit and way of fighting of the vikings of old. When Mang Ben was alive, he would always stress the importance of powerful hacking ang slashing strikes of the baston. We use the fullest potential of the baston, like the bastoneros of old. Sir Ronald included the word "Iron" to remind the members the unbreakable fighting spirit of the Vikings. This is our legacy. And only a few have been given this privilege.
