Target Focus Training (part 1)

Tim Larkin is the founder of the fighting system called "Target Focus Training." TFT is a 2 1/2 day seminar that teaches practical street self defense. Mr. Larkin was injured in a diving accident, leaving him unable to reach his goal of becoming a Seal Officer. But because of his superior performance he was eventually assigned to train Navy Seals in combat. These same knowledge helped him to formulate what he calls TFT (Target Focus Training). Below are some of the combative tips that he has shared to millions of people who wish to be safe from any deadly harm from an assailant, which I now share to those who are willing to listen.

Thanks for opting in to my Combat Training Principles
Newsletter.

Below is the first issue of what I trust will be the
most useful ezine you'll ever receive, packed with
insights into a world you may not have had much
exposure to.

In this newsletter I'm not just going to give you a
few techniques to ward off a local thug. Nope. You
see, when you train in my system I guarantee that what
you learn will keep you alive should you ever become
involved in a violent confrontation.

But to do that, you need to know something about
principles -- about the 'why' -- of what you're doing,
as well as the techniques. It's training your mind
along with your body. Without it, you're doing what
everyone else is doing -- just learning techniques for
specific situations. And in an upcoming issue I'll
explain why this is recipe for DISASTER.

So ... welcome aboard. Let's get started.

There are many constants throughout life and the
above quote truly defines one of the most critical
steps in your pursuit of any endeavor. So before we
even consider the principles of any good fighting
system or martial art, you must first answer this
question:

"What is my goal for this training -- to enhance my
athletic competition skills or to learn to effectively
deal with potentially lethal physical attacks from one
or more thugs hell-bent on harming me and/or someone I
love?"

It truly amazes me how many people just stumble into
various martial arts or combat sports never having
once considered the above question. Yet your answer to
that question makes all the difference in determining
whether you really get what you want from training.

Here's why.

If you answered "for competition", then understand
you'll find numerous martial arts and combat sports
that provide excellent instruction and challenging
forms of competition. There you can SAFELY match your
skill level against another competitor, within agreed
upon RULES and under the supervision of a judge or
referee.

The combat sport athlete has my greatest respect, and
you can certainly learn some very effective lessons in
competitive strategy and tactics from these sports and
disciplines. I know many of you may also enjoy the
sometimes-extensive physical training these arts
require in order to excel in competition.

Unfortunately, if "sport fighting" is your thing ...
if it's your answer to my first question, well, you
won't find this newsletter of much use. In fact, you
may even want to unsubscribe and save your inbox
clutter. No hard feelings. If you'd like, finish this
issue, though, to understand a little more of the
reasons "why".

Now, let's return to the question.

If you answered that your goal for training IS to
learn to effectively deal with real life or death
threats, then you've come to the right place.

You see, in upcoming issues I'll throw some
provocative stuff at you, give you insights you've
likely never been exposed to, challenge other stuff
you may hold as absolute.

It's my goal with this newsletter to arm you with the
necessary information to confidently seek out the most
effective hand-to-hand combat training.

But before we move on ...

There's one more group I must address. In fact, it's
these individuals that I really hope to reach with
this first issue of my newsletter.

The group? Well, it's those of you who answered the
question, "I want to train for BOTH athletic
competition AND life or death attacks."

Why am I concerned?

It's simply this ... YOU CAN'T DO IT!

That's right. And the reason is very simple: "You do
what you train."

Let me repeat that -- "You do what you train."
----------------------

If you train in a combat sport or martial art that
has rules restricting you for reasons of safety during
competition, then you'll react to a violent criminal
assault ...

--- Restricted By Those Very Same Rules!

But understand, those rules only apply to you. Not to
your assailant. He has NO restrictions.

That's why you must to be extremely careful when
physically training for self-protection.

You see, there's a coding process that gets
'installed' when training -- and it's this process
that ultimately determines your responses under
stress.

Examples? There are many.

But one of the more disturbing involved a major
police department's firearms training program.

The range where this city's police officers performed
their firearms training was run by a rangemaster more
concerned about keeping his range clean ... than
keeping his officers alive!

During practice with their revolvers, the officers
were required to shoot all six rounds, then eject
these spent cartridges into their hands and put them
into their pockets.

This 'RULE' was enforced because the rangemaster
didn't want his pristine range littered with empty
cartridges.

Problem was -- in a REAL life or death gunfight, an
officer must reload his or her weapon as fast as
possible. And to do that with a revolver, you
obviously just dump the empty cartridges on the ground
while quickly reloading with your free hand.

But surely these highly trained police officers would
not let their training impact them negatively in a
real situation, right?

Unfortunately, it wasn't until 2 officers were shot
dead in a gunfight that the facts were revealed ...

--- "You do what you train."

Both dead officers were found with empty cartridges
in their hands, EXACTLY as they trained on the range,
even though they faced a life or death situation where
those extra seconds may have been the difference.

So return to my initial question, and make your
decision: "What is your goal for training?"

To truly prepare yourself for life or death
confrontations you must take inventory of those
weapons readily available to you.

When my trainers ask new clients to list the
"weapons" at their disposal, they give a variety of
answers. Most tend to focus on either the actual
weapons they carry on their person or objects they use
on a day-to-day basis that might be utilized as
improvised weapons (briefcase, umbrella, pen, etc.).

This response is not confined to the
"unsophisticated" trainee, either. Extremely
competent, well-trained military commandos and special
law enforcement personnel I train give the exact same
answers!

The difference is these operators usually categorize
the weapons available to them as primary (rifle or
submachine gun) and secondary (side arm, knives, etc).

In both cases, however, the highly trained operator
and the uninitiated almost ALWAYS fail to list their
most powerful weapon.

That weapon is ... Their MIND!

Unfortunately today, very little effort is made to
properly train your mind for violent confrontation. In
fact most martial arts and combat sports go out of
their way to actually negate this "primary weapon
system" by focusing on defensive-based training. Their
programs revolve around REACTING to your attacker's
actions rather than focusing your actions on DEFEATING
the threat.

This defensive thinking causes you to hesitate as
your mind tries to figure out what is happening rather
than focusing on "targets" of opportunity.

By constantly drilling on blocks and on counters to
attacks, and through being told never to initiate
action, your mind habitually attempts to protect you
by reacting to what is happening -- rather than
helping you to defeat your attacker.

Correct training of your mind is the CRITICAL
component that unleashes your ability to take
advantage of all the other weapons available to you.

Give your mind the wrong command ... and you
hesitate; hesitation causes fear; and fear causes you
to freeze, leading to an often-disastrous result in a
true life or death struggle with a violent thug.

Many people give lip service to offensive or
aggressive thought training.

But in my 20-plus years of training clients, I've
seen a mere handful of instructors who can competently
instruct offensive/aggressive thought training coupled
with effective hand-to-hand and hand-to-weapon
training.

I hope the industry changes in the future -- but I'm
not holding my breath.

Occasionally, I do get clients who come to me with
naturally aggressive or offensive thought processes.

For example, I recently trained a female CEO who had
fought off an attack in Paris.

She was traveling in a car with her husband through
the busy streets of that city when they were assaulted
by criminals on a motorcycle. The guy on the back of
the motorcycle jumped off at a stop, broke into the
back seat of their car and attempted to steal her
laptop.

She immediately attacked the first target she saw --
which just happened to be his helmet chinstrap. She
grabbed it and repeatedly slammed his head into the
door. He dropped the laptop as her husband sped off.

She sought out my services not because she had failed
but because she was annoyed she couldn't think of a
BETTER target to attack!

With that mindset, 50% of my work was done. She
excelled in training and is now more prepared to use
her already-perfect mindset to summons better targets
and weapons.

As in the Mark Twain quote above, by focusing first
on correctly training your most important "weapons
system" -- your MIND -- you significantly increase
your ability to take out anyone threatening you or
your loved ones.

"The One, Little-Used Training Principle That'll Leapfrog Your
Combat Fighting Progress"

When most people think of martial arts training they
envision a class arranged in rows going through
various punching and kicking drills.

Form is emphasized to an incredible degree. I
remember early on in my martial arts training being
told by a master that until I had performed a movement
1,000 times (in this case it was a traditional reverse
punch) I would not be able to understand, nor properly
use, this strike.

So for much of my youth I would spend hour after hour
performing the various punches, kicks, and techniques
I'd been taught, until I acquired 'proficiency' in my
performance of these movements.

Often QUANTITY was emphasized over QUALITY. In fact
looking back on these training experiences I believe
the main goal was FATIGUE.

This often produced humorous results. Whenever I was
able to sneak a glance around the room, I'd notice the
agony on the faces of my fellow students as they
executed say, a high roundhouse kick, for the umpty-
umth time, -- a kick that now barely rose above knee
level!

The instructors were very SPECIFIC when it came to
form. Everything had to look just so -- and you were
judged by your ability to reproduce this look. You
were instructed in use of your natural body weapons
but the emphasis was on form rather than function.

The subject of whether or not this particular strike
was effective or even biomechanically correct was
never addressed. Any such questions were dismissed
with some vague reference to the art being this way
for 1000's of years, blah, blah, and blah...

Here were just some of the questions I had about
those methods:

1. What was the purpose of these drills? To make me
a better fighter? And if so, how?

2. What was the point of doing a drill to fatigue?
What did I learn from that? Did it make me better at
that drill?

3. How did the movements I learned work under the
stress of a real fight?

4. Why are some of the ways you're teaching me to
use my body seemingly more prone to hurting me than my
attacker?

Unfortunately I got nowhere asking these and other
similar questions. It took me many years of WRONG
training to find out how to correctly train my skills
for maximum fighting effectiveness under stress.

The difference is dramatic ... as are the results.

When you train with me, especially those with
extensive martial arts training, you'll be surprised how
little I correct you on 'form'. I'll rarely have you
performing 'drills'. And I never instruct you to
'memorize' a technique.

But I am very strict on whether or not you are using
your body weapons to correctly strike the targets on
your attacker. I am also a 'stickler' on the proper
biomechanical use of those body weapons you use to
execute your strikes.

Why?

Because the ONLY thing that matters when you are in a
real fight is that you -- HIT YOUR TARGETS!

The focus is not "how you look" when you execute a
one-knuckle punch to your attacker's temple, but...

--- DID YOU HIT THE TEMPLE?

How you look when you strike is a very minor concern.

I do address how you look in training but in a very
specific manner. One that helps you to more
effectively hit your targets while generating the
MAXIMUM amount of force with each of your strikes.

Still, one of the most difficult things for me to
'unlearn' from a trained martial artist or fighter is
the formatic drills their prior training inculcated in
them.

Often I'll watch as a highly trained individual
executes a picture-perfect kick or punch during a
training session, a blow that rightfully sends the
partner reeling backwards due to the force. Then,
however, I watch them stand in place (again, often in
a picture-perfect stance) rather than DYNAMICALLY
moving with their attacker.

With my training you won't make the same mistake.
Focus on what your goal is -- DESTROYING the other guy.
In order to do that you need to ensure you hit your targets.

If you can focus on that FIRST, I'll help you look
good doing it later.

As I travel throughout the world presenting seminars to various
clients I get a common response to my seminar topic
'Using Violence As A Survival Tool'.

Most of the attendees are wildly successful
individuals and influential in the business and
political circles of the countries they live in. They
often are very calculating in their business and
political lives -- always with multiple back up plans.

Yet after my presentation they often tell me that,
prior to my talk, their answer to potentially facing
violence was one of thinking positively and not
allowing such thoughts of possibly facing asocial
violence to enter their lives. Believe it or not this
is a common theme with many of my clients, wealthy or
not.

I have a very personal experience with the failure of
positive thinking.

Most that know my background know that at a very early
age (14) I was introduced to the US Navy SEALs. I
lived in Navy Housing across the street from their
training center in Coronado, CA.

When I found out that you could get paid to hang out
at the beach, shoot automatic weapons, blow stuff up,
parachute, and dive, I realized had found my calling!
(Ah, the simplicity of the 14 year old mind)

There was just one catch -- I had chronic ear problems
throughout my childhood, resulting in over 9
operations which barely saved my hearing, let alone
would hold up to the rigors of combat diving. But I
read many books on people who had overcome adversity
and won. I was determined not to let this little
genetic defect keep me from my destiny.

And I almost pulled it off!

After college I was selected for one of only 2 slots
available that year for officers to attend training.
During my years as a Navy Brat in Coronado, I
befriended many SEALs who gave me all the insider tips
on how to train in order to succeed in training: cold
showers, prescribed calisthenics, swim and running
programs. I used this info during college to prepare
for SEAL training.

More importantly they gave me great tips on how to
complete various stages of the training. How to pace
yourself, hide food, keep the instructors off your
butt. All great stuff -- and my boat team benefited
greatly from the tips.

Problem was, at some point my ears were going to be
radically tested for combat diving. That day didn't
come until all the 'hard parts' of the training were
completed. This was the stage most people easily
completed and graduated from the program and went to a
SEAL team. I had a couple of easy dives that everyone
cruised through that week -- except me.

My eardrums ruptured spectacularly. The docs tell me
today I'm lucky to have my hearing. But my eardrums
now have the flexibility of cardboard. Every ENT
doctor that sees my ears calls nurses and associates
to check out the 'war zone' inside my ear canals.

That accident ended my dream of becoming a SEAL
Officer. I was medically disenrolled from SEAL
training and instead slotted to the intelligence
community.

It all worked out OK for me as I got an incredible job
supporting the SpecOps Community and was introduced to
the base hand-to-hand combat system from which I later
developed my program, Target-Focus Training.

Then, after my military career I was able to work as a
civilian close-combat instructor in a company I co-
founded. We had clients from the various elite
branches of the military, law enforcement and
corporate community. I couldn't have designed a better
outcome. I love it.

I was lucky, though. The folly of believing that mere
positive thinking would overcome a serious genetic
weakness only cost me a career objective.

But people who believe positive thinking will protect
them from asocial violence truly are taking a much
higher risk.

When their positive thoughts fail -- they have no back
up, nothing else in their toolbox. Unfortunately when
random asocial violence enters the life of someone
unprepared -- that person often finds himself maimed,
crippled, or killed.

These newsletters are to get you thinking about
putting together your backup plan when positive
thinking fails.

Asocial Violence vs. Anti-Social Behavior
(and other questions)

I'm going to answer a few questions in this issue. Let's start
with Tony's:

(Q) Dear TFT group,

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't the techniques of martial
arts the principles their creators made to defend one's self?
Since everybody is different, everyone will find it difficult to
perfect a principle that would work perfectly for the
grandmaster. This is evident to a number of testimonials you have
posted. But principles that work because everyone can pick them
up are because they are based on scientific laws, not one's
individual form. It figures why there is hundreds of martial arts
each work best for their grandmaster at that time. There was one
martial art that was based on scientific principles, and it is
known as Wing Chun, Bruce Lee's first martial art he learnt from
grandmaster Yip Mann. What you learn in it isn't technique, but
countering, which is easy to learn but hard to master. I would
like you to comment on this, if you can, on your next newsletter,
this may make things clear for customers like my self on how your
products work to everyday people.

(A) Tony what you are describing is the number of 'legacy systems'
out in the market. A 'legacy system' is one that was developed
with certain moves and applications that require you to mimic the
way the instructor performs the moves. Your success or failure in
such 'legacy systems' has a good deal to do with your genetic
make up.

If you are genetically predisposed to be a good kicker, grappler
or puncher you tend to drift to those arts that instruct that
approach. These arts tend to place a good deal of emphasis on the
physical dynamics portion of training (basically, how well you
can mimic the moves) rather than the results (did that last move
create an injury in the other guy?).

A principal-based fighting system like TFT is concerned with one
thing and one thing only... results. Understanding the fact that
all humans possess a central nervous system and that it is
extremely vulnerable to trauma places the focus on causing injury
to the body that interrupts the central nervous system. This
simple focus allows you to use this information regardless of
your physical limitations.

We have successfully instructed thousands of clients in TFT with
all sorts of genetic limitations (most recently we instructed a
blind client). When the goal is based on verifiable results, your
ability to successfully use violence as a survival tool becomes
infinitely easier. I cover this subject in depth in my 'Nuclear
Weapon' DVD's which I'd highly recommend to truly see what I'm

(Q) Dino asks me to clarify my newsletter on the young Marine in
Fallujah who shot the 'wounded' insurgent:

What about raping and torturing the people on the other side, do
you support that as a means towards destroying the enemy? I
believe this is what they call PsyOps? This would destroy the
moral of the opponent. What if their children are tortured to
death and raped on camera as well, this could really break the
enemy's will to fight back. What is your expert opinion?

Dino

(A) I got a couple of emails like Dino's about my newsletter 'Why
We All Can't Just Get Along'. I basically said that we as a nation
still had a long way to go in understanding the facts... that the
way you win a war is by killing the enemy. Dino has now gone on a
tangent about rape, torture etc, which was not what I was
advocating in my newsletter.

But my answer to Dino's question is I don't advocate such
measures. One of my last jobs in the military was in a 'human
intelligence unit' of which one of the 'specialties' of the unit
was interrogation. What I learned during my tenure there was
that, beyond the moral objections, the cold hard facts are that
such measures (as you described) proved to be counterproductive
in the long run. Any short gains in advantage from such methods
are usually vastly outweighed by the numerous disadvantages.

Even the recent ridiculous actions by some US military prison
guards at the camps, although relatively juvenile, were very
counter-productive. But in that case, I rarely heard anyone ask
the question just who those 'poor prisoners' were in the pictures
and what actions might they have taken on the Iraqi/Afgan people
prior to their capture.

The reason I bring this point up is because these same issues
come up when I prepare clients for asocial violence. Most confuse
asocial with anti-social behavior. For clarification, asocial
violence is unavoidable -- the dirtbag is going to jump you and
do violence without ANY provocation. Anti-social behavior is the
obnoxious drunk who harasses you at a baseball game and instead
of you leaving or getting security to handle the situation, you
opt to take matters into your own hands.

Asocial does not give you an option to use violence. Either you
use it... or violence will be done to you. Anti-social behavior
gives YOU the choice to disengage -- which is ALWAYS the smart
move. Unfortunately people often confuse the two, treating
asocial as anti-social and vice versa.

Our forces are not out 'arresting' burglars or recidivist
criminals; they are destroying an enemy that would use any means
necessary to do the same or worse to them. Luckily the guys in
the field seem to have that approach to the war.

You should train to deal with the asocial violence of the
sociopath... and KNOW the difference... so you don't participate
in the avoidable anti-social behavior of others.


(Q) JF Writes:

Hello Tim:

There are no secrets. True, authentic traditional Chinese Martial
Arts were created for and serve only one purpose. Namely, they
destroy the human form. Period. All the 'artsy fartsy' fortune
cookie bullshit psychobabble in the world cannot obscure this
straightforward fact. If people are looking for general health
conditioning ... they would be well advised to ride a bike, run
or power walk, and swim for about 20 minutes each and 3 times per
week. There, it's just that simple. REAL martial arts put the
emphasis where it properly belongs, on the very first word ...
MARTIAL. It is first and foremost War conducted in an artful
(skillful) way and NOT artistic expression in a martial medium.
To earn dangerous hands a person MUST engage in dangerous
practice.

(A) Gee JF, howd'ya really feel?

I'm not sure which newsletter JF was referring to but I wanted to
comment on this one because I don't think it is correct to
compare one martial art or fighting system to another to see
which is better. The purpose of this newsletter is to discuss the
use of violence as a survival tool so the question should be how
does (insert martial art or combat sport training here) compare
to real violence?

That IS the standard we use for TFT. I don't teach people to
'TFT' someone. I teach them to use violence -- which ANYONE can
use with ZERO training right now. Our prison population is full
of SUCCESSFUL users of violence with little or NO formal training
in any martial art or combat sport.

Other than that, I like the email JF.

Jissen No Ho (self defense fighting)






(Disclaimer: The following combative tips are taken from Shidoshi Stephen K. Hayes's, a ninjutsu master, book entitled "Lore of the Shinobi Warrior vol. 5". I find his words very enlightening, eventhough I'm not a practitioner of the art of ninjutsu. I wish to share this knowledge to all who are willing to listen. I do not own the book nor do I own the words that are posted in it. Enjoy reading!)



Before beginning my training in the Japanese tradition of ninjutsu, I studied with a martial arts instructor who advocate that his art was only ten percent physical and fully 90 percent mental when it came to street self-defense. By this statement, that instructor meant to imply that all the techniques in the world would still be found to be lacking if the martial artists was unable to summon up and engage the proper frame of mind and fighting spirit when it came time to face murderous attacker.



The grim reality is indeed even more appropriate to acknowledge in this age of "enforced peace" in which we all live. Just where do we go to get our lessons in cultivating this all-important "90 percent" that hovers above training in mechanical technique itself? How are students of the fighting arts to know if their teachers and lessons are valid and are taking them progressively toward the twin goals of confidence and safety that so often inspire citizens of the modern world to out the study of the arts of self-protection?



It is common for instructors of the formalized martial sports and recreation systems so popular in the world today to assume that because they are skilled in their systems set away of performing basic movements, kata, steps, strikes, and throws, they are automatically qualified to discuss and give expert instruction in self-defense and street combatsurvival. This often completely false assumption is made despite the fact that the majority of popular martial arts available in the world today did not have their foundings based on the premise of self-protection combat. Most of today's martial arts were established either as sports or spiritual development systems; their founders did not intend for them to be use as methods for streetfighting. In truth, the majority of martial systems popular offered to customers today are nowhere near being related to the cold and often horrible realities of self-protection combat.



It could be argued that there is only one truly reliable way to become a master of the technique of fighting other people. Facetiously of course; I offer the following suggestions as to how to become good at fighting.


First of all, find a place where you are sure to encounter people who fit the following categories:


* They all feel deprived of many of the benefits that life has presented others (financially, culturally, racially, politically, etc.), and resent those others as live more satisfying lives.


* They all experience inner annoyance and lack of fulfillment as a result of agitated internal electrochemical imbalances (inability to attain a sufficient level of satiation for sexual demands or proper nutritional balance).


* They all blur any possible realization of personal social and community responsibilities by inculcating reduced powers of discretion, discernment, and rational thought through the intentional abuse of intoxicating substances.


In other words, the first major step in this procedure of learning how to be a tough fighter is to find a low-class pick-up bar.


The second step is to enter the bar and shove some of the patrons around, either verbally or physically.


The third step is to experience the action of the fight.


The fourth step is to check out of the hospital and wait for the next weekend so that you can repeat the process all over again.


Continue to follow these four steps until you have gained sufficient experience to enable you to eliminate the necessity of going through the fourth step every time.


Perhaps the ultimate in efficient and effective methods for developing the skill of defeating other people in fights is to arrange to be born into a family that dwells in the heart of a violent and deprived community, and lacks the collective education to understand the mechanics of how fear, cruelty, violence, disease, and ignorance perpetuate themselves for one generation to the next. After growing up hungry, abused, and frustrated, by the time you reach young adulthood you will undoubtedly be a good fighter if you survive the training of your youth.


What of training for those persons who were not born in the inhumane realms of hatred, aggression, abusive greed, intolerance, and ignorance? How are those persons who were born in realms of peace, fulfillment, joy, and enlightened growth to go about cultivating the combat self protection skills necessary for survival when forced to enter the darker, less elevated strata of human society?


Here are some practical suggestions for cultivating fighting spirit without going so far as to poison your positive outlook in life in general:


* Be honest about your feelings. Recognize and acknowledge these emotions that could save you in a confrontation as they appear in your consciousness. Do not back down from rightful anger in the face of danger just because you were culturally patterened to be a "good little boy" 30 year ago. Muggers, thieves, and rapists often count on their potential victims to be "good and moral citizens", unwilling to resort to the same kind of brutal and unsocial violence that the criminal chooses to direct at them.


* Be aware. Do not allow yourself to travel through life as though encased in a narrow envelop of fog. Actively expand the scope of your senses. Whenever you catch yourself drifting or pulling in your awareness when you are out in a public place, firmly remind yourself that that is not what you are training to do and return your conscious perception out to your surroundings once again. Remember that this will take time and work, so do not let yourself get discouraged if past bad habits are tough to shake off.


* Listen to your hunches. Do not venture into situations that you feel somehow have a high percentage of probability of turning into dangerous confrontations. If you are not sure of yourself in a certain situation, why take a chance unnecessarily? Find a safer, more reliable way to get done what you must do.


* Be creative. Do not think that conventional fist fighting must always be the answer when confronted by a hostile assailant. Sometimes it is possible to confuse your attacker so that he does not see you as the victim, sometimes you can disappear from the dangerous situation, and sometimes you can set up an inescapable trap from which your assailant cannot get at you.


* Know your own powers and limitations. Long before you find yourself in a physical confrontation, take the time to explore the various things you can and cannot do. With knowledgeable friends or a qualified martial arts instructor, try out your basic strikes and kicks, body shifts and dodges, and grabs or throws. Find our what you are best at doing and hone those skills into usable form. Find out what you are weakest at doing and either train diligently to build up those skills, or be especially careful to avoid situations where those weak points will have to be faced.


* Plan ahead. Practice with realistic drills just what you will say, think, and do in the case of an actual attack. Do not waste your time trying to develop fancy exotic technique skills like you see in the movies. Do not confuse tactics for winning martial arts contests with life protecting combat skills; street fights rarely ever resemble sports tournaments. Stick to realistic and reliable basic moves that have lesser chance of going wrong. Use your meditation sessions to rehearse mentally just what you will do in those scenarios most likely to happen in your own life. Have your strategy planned out so that you are not forced to think everything through in a time of extreme pressure and danger.

* Be appropriate. Honestly acknowledge just what the purpose of self-defense is all about. Keep in mind that your goal is to get home in a safe and healthy manner. Do not get fooled and pressured into feeling that you are obligated in any way to handle the confrontation in a set manner. In life-threatening self-defense situation, you are not all obligated to win a fighting contest, convert a criminal mind to morally enlightened behavior, prove how special you are , clean up the streets for the potential victims, embody ideal macho movie hero behavior, or do anything at all beyond that being killed or maimed. If you can acknowledge this in a sincere and form-the-heart manner, you can create a lot more room for potential actions other than a toe-to-toe hook and jab fist fight. You can see that running, trickery, "dirty" tactics, "unfair" fighting techniques, or anything at all that comes to mind or hand is a valid means for getting home in a safe and healthy condition.

* Be realistic. Do not kid yourself about just how you would be willing to go in self-defense confrontations. It is easy to talk tough about all you will do if assaulted, and yet quite another situation when the events suddenly bring a human being against you as an attacker. Will you really be able to go through with all the violent actions that you can so easily describe in theory? If your response to any discussion of self-protection is, "I'll just rely on my trusty forty five automatic," are you truly willing to draw and fire no matter what the attack, and are you really willing to stand up and take legal consequences resulting from such action?

* Keep in touch with local events. Check newspapers, listen to the radio, watch T.V. news, and keep on the alert for information concerning local trends in personal attack in your community, or in areas that you may be traveling to visit. Take appropriate cautions and plan ahead so that you are not caught off-guard by something that you could have known about ahead of time.

* Use everything at hand! A self-defense situation is nothing at all like a sports competition. An attacker will easily use your hesitation to resort to "unfair" tactics as an aid to accomplishing his own lowly intentions. Therefore, cultivate a mind set of doing whatever it takes to guarantee your safety.

Path of the Warrior





(I decided to post in my blog the book of Lucas Estrella Shultz entitled "Path of the Warrior". It is a series of gathered teachings of the author's venerable masters of the martial arts. These same teachings were applied by the samurais of old in their search of enlightenment through the path of the martial arts. It is a book that has helped me tremendously to understand the spiritual side of my art. Now I wish to share these same wisdom to those who wish to be open to it. Read to hearts content!)

FORWARD:


This writing gathers the teaching of my venerable Masters throughout all the years in search of my center and its connection with rest of the universe. The Path I chose is that of the noble martial arts, legacy of spiritual ancestors. Thanks to this knowledge I have been able to glimpse the powers of the sky and earth which still sleep inside myself. Thanks to them I have known a world parallel to ours which, on occasion, slightly touches our daily life and covers us with amazement. I have learned that things that things are not always what they appear to be, and I have found the tools to cultivate sensitivity and love for all the sentient beings of the world. It has been a trail in constant evolution, of questions without definitive answers, of a restless heart and of dreams that drive me to keep to taking up the sword that attempts to cut the chains of ignorance and enlightens the Sacred Path of the Warrior.


INTRODUCTION:


During his life, a Warrior passes through different situations, stages and tests. Each section of the book represents one of these and reflects the way that, according to my humble understanding, a Warrior should act. As he travels on his journey, experience his pleasure and pain, his challenges, successes, and defeats - things that we all face in life. He shows us how to learn from each of these experiences.

You may choose simply to follow the Warrior on his cyclical journey through life. But may also choose to use the Warrior's Path as a means of bringing to light the answers that live inside you - either in response to a specific question or to give you guidance for the day ahead. If you wish you can write down the numbers 1 to 36 and place them inside a bag, drawing out a number to direct you to a reading, or you may prefer just to open the book on a random page. Whichever way, you will find the reading that something inside you chooses - the reading that is helpful for you at that moment.

May the words brighten the Way. May the mind open. May the sun shine. From heart to heart.

The Warrior is Born


The snow has melted,
The forest breathes again.
The sun reflects over the pond...
Once again.

The Warrior Awakens



On the horizon, the limit between heaven and earth blurs. On the horizon, it is impossible to discern. Before watching the sunset, I sit on a stable stone.



You have been living in an unreal state. You lack a basis. You are in the air. All this time you lived thinking that things were in a determinate way. You have acted accordingly and this is right. But on the path to knowledge, the Warrior must penetrate deeper and deeper inside himself and his life. On the path to knowledge, the Warrior must die only to be reborn again, with fresh insight.



It is the time to awake. Suddenly, you have realized how fragile your beliefs were. Those that used to be your pillars are now only faint thoughts. The Almighty has played the old joke of taking away the chair on which you were going to sit everyday. You have hurt yourself, you have felt pain, and thi is also good. If you had fallen down over something soft, you would not have paid any attention to it. But the truth is that you have landed on another reality. You are bewildered, your consciousness flustered. You do not understand anything of what has happened. You feel like you have wasted your time until now, and you may even feel shame for what you did before. Retrospectively, you will see yourself as somebody dedicated to futile things.



The pain blinds. Even if you did not understand it, know that what has happened to you is something marvellous. You are no longer the same as you were some moments ago and; if you are wise enough, you will never be. Other things will matter now, you will climb other mountains. You will face other demons, other brothers will walk along with you. Live your new life, look with new eyes. Nevertheless, be prepared to be reborn. Again. Only by doing so will you be able to reach the end of the way.

The Warrior Begins The Journey

You have been too long in this place. The air is rarefied. Your life is stagnant, you do not flow. You must, therefore, leave in search of new dawns.

Your setting no longer brings you new things. Leave the superfluous, take with you only what is essential, the minimum possible. Your heart, your spirit and your body are enough.

Put your affairs in order before you go. Close the circles, leave no loose ends. May your departure be natural, just like the migrating cranes in winter. There is no need to escape. Simply leave this place, this situation, behind. Go. You will surely find new fellow travelers.

You may come back some day.

The Warrior Shows His Interior

Even if it hurts, live with the truth. This is the path of the Warrior. This is the only path.

The blade of the sword is sharp and cold. The hilt is rounded and warm. Only this way can I fight. Why do you wear an armor? Why do you fear so much? Nothing serious can happen to you now. Open your heart to sun and life so that the world can reflect in you. If you are embittered, open yourself. light will flow smoothly.

Show the interior. Discard the superficial and free yourself. Live with the truth. If someone deserves warmth, this is what he must receive. To caress when there is need to caress. To strike when there is need to strike. May no one be in any doubt about you are, think or feel.

The Warrior Seeks for the Brother



The path will take the rest of your life and more. Why do it alone? It is good to travel accompanied. Seek then for brother of the way.



With the brother you will be able to journey the path, equal to equal. Whenever he is tired, you will have to keep rowing. When you sleep, he will have to stay alert. When one of you stumbles, the other will be there to help. When one is ill, the other will run to heal.



Little by little the bonds will strengthen and your hearts will rejoice when embracing after each battle. You will share the sacred and the profane, companions in prayers and in drunkenness. Each one with his own story, his love and his needs, submerged into life. But in the middle of the maelstrom you will remember your friend and your heart will feel comforted.



Year after year you will traverse together the Sacred Path of the Warrior. Back to back, one hundred combats will be one hundred victories. And in a distant day at the end of your lives, you will sit side by side, gazing at the sunset in the silent desert.

The Warrior Gathers the Armies



Gather, accumulate, focus and jump into the abyss. Only by doing so will you be able to stay whole.



A big task awaits. You will not be able to perform it unless you concentrate your energies and adjust yourself seriously to battle. Unify your heart, your spirit and your body. Align them. Center yourself. Breathe in. Focus all your being to the duty that comes near. Do not go around wasting your strengths. Do not give them up to the dark side - not now, at least. If you do, the demon will crush you like a frog. Your life depends on what you are going to do. Stop smiling because it is not a game. You may die in the attempt.

The Warrior Cuts the Chains



You have been a slave of your weakness for a long time. Swing your axe and cut the chains. Only then will you be free.



You are faced with a big task. You know you have to do it, but you have been postponing it, either because it will be painful or because you feel you are incapable of doing it. But you cannot ignore your inner voice. At some time you will have to take charge of your chariot, so assume your warrior status and fulfill your duty now. It is a blind act, without possible repentance once started. Do not pay attention to your comfort, nor to your laziness nor your indulgence. Cut the chains and free yourself.

The Warrior Searches for the Demon



The demon has harassed you for too long. You have given him a big advantage. If you want to be free you have to exchange roles. Gather your armies before beginning the journey.



It is no longer possible to keep living this way. You are playing his game, he has you at his mercy. Seek the demon inside yourself - dare to look inside. In the journey you may find vermin, but you will also find princesses and masters. They will help help you in combat. That does not mean that they will fight for you, but that they may dry the sweat from your brow, wipe the blood from your wounds.



Pursue the demon, harass him, face him. Descend to the bottom of hell in search for him. You will see that he hides himself and avoids your presence. When this happens do not think that you have won the battle. In this moment, do not let cowardliness take possession of you and make you give up the search. If you do not see him when you look for him, look deeper into the unexplored nooks. Hunt him out day and night. Learn to recognize his footprints, the way he smells, his marks. And when you find him, split him open with a single slash of the sword - without anger, but with the strength of the thunder. Observe him carefully. Make sure he is dead. Then ascend back to reality. You will be triumphant, so stay humble. Seat yourself, breathe. And then continue your way.

The Warrior Conceals Himself



The way carries you to a dangerous place. In order to come out unharmed, you must be able to see without being seen.



You must weigh the next step carefully. Conceal yourself, fuse with the ground and keep your eyes wide open. Flex your muscles, gather the armies, contract your body and then release it in a jump. Spring over your enemy without noticing it, he will be lost.

The Warrior Stays Alert



A real Warrior stays always guarding, always alert, stalking. You must keep your eyes wide open in order to be able to look inside yourself.



See that your heart is always clean, free and light. Watch the course that your life is taking at this moment. Are you going where you want to go? Or are you simply being dragged? How much of yourself have you given up? In which important things have you made concessions? What is the sense of how you are living now? In what way is this related to your past? What will the consequences be for the future? Are you still keeping the dignity of every Warrior? Is your heart still tender and kind? Is your spirit still so strong that you would jump into the abyss?



One blink is enough, and you will be thousands of miles away from home. Are you happy? A Warrior stays always guarding. A Warrior keeps the eyes always open.

The Warrior Shows His Sword


Stand up with dignity over the earth. Show that you are ready to fight until death.



Your hand hold the sword. In profile, it's sharp end points forward. Demarcate a territory, be the lord of it. Emanate silent power. All the fury is awakened but concealed, ready to spring forth. May your adversary see that the whole universe is standing in front of him. Roar if it is necessary. Howl like the wolf in the mountains. Bristle your enemy's skin. Intimidate him with a shining glance. The combat will be avoided. Life will b e preserved. Retire humbly even when you have triumphed.


This is the way of the Warrior.

The Warrior Obstruct the Way


It is enough. You have waited for a long time. You have restrained yourself from acting, waiting for things to take up their natural course once more. But they have not done it. so you must act.


Your enemy has advanced more than he should have. He has trodden over every body and every dignity that he has met on the way. He has left behind many tears and frustrations, and yet he feels no regrets.


You must stop this situation, since you are the strongest one now. So face this person and obstruct the way. If you do not do it, innocent people will keep on suffering from this depot. If your hands are not enough to stop him, use your shield. If your shield is not enough, use your menacing spear. If you still cannot do it, unsheathe your sword and split him in two. Risk losing everything in this combat; if you do, you will always emerge victorious. No matter what happens, you will always emerge victorious.

The Warrior Jumps into the Abyss

Jump into the abyss. Risk everything and throw yourself in.

Even if everything around you seems to indicate that you will die, you must take that risk. The hand of the Almighty will save you in the last moment. You will suffer from hunger and cold. You will feel the horror gripping your body as you fall. But do not doubt. If you do so, you will die. Trust that nothing is going to happen to you. And you will land softly.

The Warrior Struggles


The first sunbeams arrive on the beach. The armies have arranged themselves and everything is ready. The battle will break out at any moment. There is no choice. You must struggle.

In doing so, put all your spirit, heart and body into it. Fight centered, unified, aligned. Fight tirelessly, day and night if necessary. Stay alert to the four directions. Trust the animal that live within. The battle will have peaks and valleys; be sensitive to that and adapt yourself to it.

One time forwards, one time backwards. One time attacking, one time defending. Disperse your adversary, charge him while he is breathing in. Overwhelm him. Do not give him time to gather the armies. Constantly change your strategies. Attack high and then low. Then low and then to the center. Vary the rhythm of assaults. One time fast, one time slow. One time slow, one time still.

Be a continuous change from one animal to another, from one element to another. Water against stone. Fire against metal. Wood against earth. So, it will be impossible to classify you within a fixed pattern, and therefore you will be unbeatable. Follow your spontaneity and keep yourself light and bouyant. May your adversary not be able to touch you, yet may he feel the power of your blows. Use your hands, your feet, your elbows and your knees. Evade, then counter-attack. Anticipate his movements and neutralize them before they begin. let him pass and then fell on him. Make his weapons useless.

Shorten the distance, attack and then get out of his reach. Fight with all the energy of your youth.

But more important than all this is to fight without anger. If savagery and cruelty enter your heart, no matter what you do, you will be lost. You will convert yourself into that which you fight, and the dark side will have a new recruit within its lines.

So take firm hold of your sword and enter into battle. After vanquishing, retire in silence. There is nothing to celebrate. Death is always accompanied by tears. You have only accomplished your duty. Never forget that.

The Warrior Suffers


Life has put you in a blind alley. You have no way to escape. The only choice left is to suffer.

Do not try to avoid it. On the contrary, seek your pain. Feel it. Dissolve it in your saliva and then swallow it, digest it, assimilate it, make it part of you. Feel the walls of your heart detaching. Feel the muscles ripping away from your bones. Live the disintegration of yourself through your suffering. Consider yourself worthless. A pair of old sandals thrown at the roadside by a tired walker. An empty bottle thrown away by a drunken man without destiny. Consider yourself insignificant, which is what we really are. Cry, blaspheme against your God and burn his image if it is necessary. Listen to the silence of your loneliness. You are alone in the world. No one will be able to do anything for you. You are lost and helpless. Shattered. Once more, disintegrated in adversity. Go down to the depth of your torment. Die in each cell of your body.

But during your agony, only one thing should remain inviolate: a thin red thread that runs along your spine from beginning to end. May something, a minimum of consciousness and dignity, be confined within this space.

And when you have touched the bottom, your light body will then rise up to the surface and you will be able to breathe in again. You will discover that the contorted monstrosities you saw on the way into the abyss no longer exist in your return to light. Do not despair. It will take time to go back. The important thing is that you will arrive. No matter what happens, keep faith within your spine. You will arrive.

The Warrior Vanquishes

It is already said. If you fight in harmony with the universe, you cannot be vanquish. If you fight because it is the only way of recovering the lost equilibrium, you cannot but vanquish. If you fight because you have already tried all other possibilities, you cannot but vanquish.

But what does it mean, to vanquish? To win the battle through making your adversary through making your adversary feel the great power that you hold within, the power of the universe. To make your opponent understand that it is senseless to shed blood over this beautiful earth. It is to make a friend out of an enemy. To contribute to the peace in this world. To fulfill the will of the Almighty. It is to live.

The Warrior Retires


Everything indicates that you must retire. If you stay were you are, tears will be shed in vain.

Do not stay. Retreat, disappear with dignity. Do not run away. Retire in silence, without anyone noticing. Slide away softly. This is not your place. Do not stubbornly persevere on your course. If you have found nothing but adversity or, even worse, you doubt, it is because this is neither the time nor the appropriate place. Vanish without a trace and there will be no wound to heal.
